Carlton E. Appelo has had a lifetime interest in history, the son of a local Finnish Deep River family, he ran the local telephone company for decades. Beginning in the 1960's he began putting local historical supplements in the phone directories. Soon he began publishing longer books about the areas small towns under separate covers.
